Mention voter engagement, and you may receive responses ranging from “I’m not voting; it doesn’t make a difference” to “I’m registered”. Both comments are troubling. The first comment reflects voter depression and the second comment reflects complacency. Both are troubling. On one end the person has just given up hope of affecting change. On the other end the person may seem to be doing the right thing, but unwillingness to really take a deep dive into the real change actually knowing what you are voting for can produce.
The Social Justice Ministry is seeking to combat both ends of the spectrum with the Road to the Polls campaign.
Judge Action

The campaign begins with a Judicial candidate action sponsored by Greater Cleveland Congregations Pretrial Justice team. The team has taken on the issue around the amount of time it takes from the time individuals are arrested until their first appearance before a judge to post bond. Data has shown that three days or more in jail can upend a person’s life, consequently affecting the family and community. The power that judges hold in this issue is recognized. For that reason six of the candidates for Cuyahoga County Common Pleas judge will answer questions relating to pretrial justice. People al too often know who they are voting for when it comes to judges. The forum gives voters an opportunity view first hand how candidates respond to questions. It is necessary for voters to take a deep dive and research candidates and issues.

The Social Justice Ministry will partner with Greater Cleveland Congregations to canvas in Fairfax. GCC is nonpartisan, so it doesn’t tell people who to vote for, but reminds them of the importance of their vote

Data has shown that post cards to remind voters can make a difference. So the Social Justice Ministry will be sending cards to voters in Georgia where there are hotly contested races going on. Along with the purpose, attendees with enjoy food, fun and fellowship. Attendees will also assemble the annual Voting Information Guide.
A Call to Act

In yet another troubling period for persons of Color in America we are reminded of our civic duties and responsibilities. During dark times the church and the Body of Believers have guided the community iin its transformation with focus on God while relying on principles taught by Jesus Christ.
A Call to Act is a faith-based discussion centered on justice and social action. The objective of the workshop is to provide Believers with increased awareness as they prepare to cast their votes in coming elections.
Pastor Dylan Sellers will facilitate and lead the two-day workshop. The Social Justice Ministry and the Board of Christian Education are sponsoring this event. The Cleveland Baptist Association is also partnering with the two groups.
The goal of the campaign is ensure that voters go beyond just being informed, or just go through the motions of voting, but truly understand how their vote can make a difference, and how they can help others to also make a difference.
